"Insurance fulfils an important role in the economy by taking on risks and mobilising savings. It contributes to economic growth and financial stability if it functions well. With assets worth two thirds of EU GDP, the EU insurance sector is a significant part of the financial sector. With liabilities comprising one third of European households' wealth, consumers depend on the insurance sector for their future income … Given this role in the economy and the financial sector, the ESRB Insurance Expert Group (IEG) has identified four main ways in which insurers can be the source of systemic risks or amplify these." |
