ERM Glossary: Asset-backed security

An asset-backed security (ABS) is
a security that represents an interest in an underlying pool of referenced
assets. The referenced pool can comprise any assets which attract a set of
associated cash flows. Commonly they involve pools of residential or commercial
mortgages but they could also include leases, credit card receivables, motor
vehicles, student loans etc.
